“The everything scone with cream cheese, please,” she said to the woman at the walk-up window that reminded her of the streets of Italy.

Her smile spoke 1000 words. He had never before seen someone get so excited about a scone. She read his expression.

“I get it from my Mom’s side. We just love a good scone. People tend to think they are too dry, but I assure you this is not true. As with many baked goods, you have to seek out a good baker, or be the good baker,” she said matter-of-factly. “Plus, they are the perfect companion to a cup of coffee, or cappuccino, on a Sunday.”

“I thought I was the perfect companion to a cuppa coffee on a Sunday?” he asked, pretending to be offended.

“You are the perfect companion to a cup of anything on any day,” she told him with such a calming and reassuring voice. He felt an electric current beneath his skin warming his heart.

“So what will you have for your cup of Joe, the regular Americano for the Amerikana?” he asked, playfully touching her right side, the space between her last rib and her hip. She shrieked in the salty air and grabbed his hand to shield herself from uncontrollable laughter. They flirted like two teenagers. An older couple glanced over at them and smiled at each other, remembering a time long ago when, they too, were young and falling in love.

“Actually, I am going to switch it up. I will have an iced cappuccino with the almond and macadamia nut milk,” she said as though she were announcing a major decision.

“Wow, so very adventurous of you, and yet so very out of the ordinary from your routine order,” he exclaimed, this time kissing her on the forehead and squeezing her hand.

“You think adventure is dangerous? You should try routine, it’s lethal,” she whispered in his ear, quoting one of her favorite authors, Paulo Coelho.

“Damn, I love this girl,” he thought to himself.

“What are you going to get?” she asked, sincerely curious about his choice.

“Oh, definitely the breakfast sandwich and the drip coffee…. and the loaded biscuit, because I know you want to try a bite of it, and I know how you feel about jam,” he said with a smirk.

“Damn, I love this guy,” she thought to herself.

“Just a bite, or two, I’ll give you a bite of my scone too!” she said enthusiastically.

Everything scone with cream cheese

Together they grabbed their breakfast and coffee and went to a nearby bench to sit while they ate. He had never been to Maine, her Motherland. She was born right there in the city of Portland. She claims that she is the only true Mainer in her family since she was the only one actually born in Maine. “How cute and loyal is that,” he thought to himself. Her dedication to her home state was just another quality he loved about her.

“How is your scone?” he asked.

Her silence told him everything. She was simply appreciating every bite.

“Perfect companion to the perfect companion,” she finally answered. “And how is your loaded biscuit?” she asked.

“I haven’t tried it yet, I wanted you to take the first bite,” he told her while holding the biscuit up to her lips.

“Oh you shouldn’t have….” she said jokingly and took a bite.

Again, silence.

“Thank you, now it is your turn,” she said holding up the loaded biscuit to his lips.

As he took a bite his mind created the image of her feeding him a piece of cake at their wedding. The image made him happy and hopeful. His face looked more serious than what you may expect to see for someone who just took a bite of a breakfast biscuit, she felt concerned.

“You don’t like it?” she asked.

He laughed. “No, no, I love it. It’s the perfect companion to my perfect companion,” he assured her.

When they were done enjoying their lazy Sunday morning baked goods and coffee they gave each other a kiss and walked over to the light green Vespa they had rented for the week. He got on first, and she grabbed his waist to hop on behind him. Together they felt safe and happy. Together, in tandem (coffee), they rode.
